All You Need to Know About Car Paint Touch-Up

Despite how hard we try to keep our automobile from scratches and chips, over time they keep adding up. It always seems like they occur from nowhere. One minute you have a nice shiny exterior, the next there are small damages all over your door grip and the front bumper. Those damages look too minor to justify taking the vehicle to the pro shop, but still are very noticeable.

Luckily, car paint touch-up is a swift and easy on the pocket way of repairing those little paint scratches. To avoid expensive repairs, get rid of those damages when possible. If not fixed straight away, they can result in larger problems like oxidation development and even corrosion. In the end, you might pay more money and waste more time trying to repair the problem. No one wants to throw away hundreds of dollars. That is why I try to fix it immediately.

With top quality touch-up products that can be found, you don’t need to get your car to the shop for paint repair. Small auto scratches can be easily fixed at home in a few minutes.

Among the most popular products for small damages is a touch-up paint pen. It is easy to apply, doesn’t dry out and can be kept inside the automobile. For larger repair areas, you can use a touch-up paint that comes in a bottle or in a spray can. Bottle paint is best for areas not bigger than a dime. For areas outside the capabilities of the bottle touch-up paint, spray painting works ideal. Spray cans can also be used for small repairs. Spray some paint into the cup and bush it on the scratch by an art brush.

When using spray cans, don’t forget personal protection. Toxic fumes from the paint can cause damage to your eyes, lungs and skin. Shield yourself by putting on goggles, respirator and gloves. Try to perform all the spraying in the outdoor environment or in a garage with a good air flow.

Before getting the paint, you need to know the color code. Wrong color can easily make the damage even worse. The color code should be located on a label someplace inside of your vehicle. Sadly, the location of the label can vary depending on the make and model of the car. Begin by looking on side of the door jamb, glove box and trunk.

One more important thing to keep in mind is a good touch-up paint doesn’t need to be sanded or buffed after it is applied. Meaning less coats and less time for the repair. With high-quality paint you will need to apply only 2-3 coats to hide the primer, unlike low quality paint that requires 5-7 layers to achieve similar result. That being said, don’t select the cheapest paint. Do your research first.

Always spend some time preparing the area before car paint repair. A lot of people make a mistake applying paint without preparing the area first. What they don’t realize is that car’s exterior might be covered with wax, sealers and oils. These kind of contaminants require a specially designed auto soap, or a prep solvent to remove all that dirt and grease from the exterior.

Car paint touch-up is not as difficult as it may appear to someone who has no practice. With good instructions and right products, you can repair it in no time. Doing car paint touch-up yourself will save you a lot of money and can even provide you a personal satisfaction when you see your vehicle shining like new again.
